Abstract:
Islamic medicine is regarded as a comprehensive medical school with a long, glorious and worldwide reputation. Some of the physicians of this school are famous worldwide and have contributed valuable services to the scientific world. Given the dramatically increasing prevalence of cancer and the relative inefficacy of current medications, there is a great demand for the introduction of effective therapeutic approaches. To this end, integration of traditional medicine with modern medical treatments represents a promising option. In this essay, methods of diagnosis and treatment of cancer have been mentioned from the viewpoint of five famous physicians before the Mongolian attack who used Islamic medicine, namely Rhazes, Akhaveyni, Ahwazi, Avicenna and Jorjani. The ideas discussed dates back to a period between the eighth and fourteenth centuries.

Authors: Farooq Ahmad et all.
Journal:
Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge (+)
Year: 2011
Impact Factor: 0.5
Abstract:
It is well known that the individuals with different Mizaj (Temperament) have different morphological features and different psychological profiles. However, very little is known about the variations in their physiological capacities and the variations in their normal values of biochemical substances in the body. In this study, level of enzyme alkaline phosphatase in serum was estimated in 52 healthy males divided into different groups according to their temperaments. The serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level in Damawi (Sanguineous) volunteers was found significantly higher (p< 0.05) than their Balghami (Phlegmatic) counterparts. The mean values of ALP in Damawi and Balghami volunteers were found to be 7.85 ± 1.6 and 5.8 ± 0.62, respectively showing a relationship between temperament and the ALP.

Title: Old Remedies for Epilepsy: Avicenna’s Medicine
Authors: Asadi-Pooya et all.
Journal:
Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal (+)
Year: 2011
Abstract:
Background: The history of epilepsy and its treatments dates back to at least 4 millennia. Avicenna, c. 980 AD in Bukhara, Khorasan – 1037 in Hamedan was a Persian-speaking Iranian physician, who has many recommendations and suggested various therapies for epilepsy in his book, The Canon of Medicine. Methods: We first reviewed the most important ancient treatments for epilepsy mentioned by Avicenna and considered those as the key words for our next step. Then, we made a literature search (medline and scopus) with those key words to find out new scientific findings in modern medicine about the Avicenna’s suggestions. Results: Among the Avicenna’s recommended therapies for epilepsy, only Rue has been tested for anticonvulsant activities in modern medicine. Interestingly, it had a dose dependent anticonvulsant effect. Conclusion: It is worthwhile to consider the Avicenna’s recommended therapies for epilepsy and to design future scientific studies based on his suggestions.

Title: Scientific Evaluation of Edible Fruits and Spices Used for the Treatment of Peptic Ulcer in Traditional Iranian Medicine
Authors: Farzaei MH et all.
Journal:
ISRN Gastroenterology (+)
Year: 2013
Abstract:
In traditional Iranian medicine (TIM), several edible fruits and spices are thought to have protective and healing effects on peptic ulcer (PU). The present study was conducted to verify anti-PU activity of these remedies. For this purpose, edible fruits and spices proposed for the management of PU in TIM were collected from TIM sources, and they were searched in modern medical databases to find studies that confirmed their efficacy. Findings from modern investigations support the claims of TIM about the efficacy of many fruits and spices in PU. The fruit of Phyllanthus emblica as a beneficial remedy for PU in TIM has been demonstrated to have antioxidant, wound healing, angiogenic, anti-H. pylori, cytoprotective, antisecretory, and anti-inflammatory properties. The fruit of Vitis vinifera has been found to be anti-H. pylori, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, angiogenic, cytoprotective, and antioxidant. The fruit and aril of seed from Myristica fragrans exert their beneficial effects in PU by increasing prostaglandin, modulation of nitric oxide and inflammatory mediators, wound healing, antisecretory, antacid, antioxidant, and anti-H. pylori activities, and improving angiogenesis. Pharmacological and clinical studies for evaluation of efficacy of all TIM fruits and spices in PU and their possible mechanisms of action are recommended.

Title: What does Al-Qanun Fi Al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) say on head injuries?
Authors: Ahmet Aciduman et all.
Journal:
Neurosurgical Review (+)
Impact Factor(IF):
1.97
Year: 2009
Abstract:
A historical approach could help in the detection of some viewpoints that cannot be paid attention to or signified by a purely medical one. In this text, the important points of Ibn Sina's (Avicenna) treatise on head injuries have been introduced in light of neurosurgery. The most detailed chapter regarding head injuries in Canon, under the title of "Fracture of the Skull," presents rather detailed knowledge concerning skull fractures and their surgical treatments in the eleventh century and the medical paradigm of that era. Ibn Sina provided extremely systematic knowledge on head traumas along with both his observations and experiences and citations from the writings of the ancient physicians, Galen and Paul of Aegina. Regarding the treatment of skull fractures, Ibn Sina is a real successor of Galen and Paul of Aegina.

Title: Efficacy of Iranian Traditional Medicine in the Treatment of Epilepsy
Authors: Mehri Abdollahi Fard and Asie Shojaii
Journal:
BioMed Research International (+)
Impact Factor(IF):
2.88
Year: 2013
Abstract:
Epilepsy is a brain disorder which affects about 50 million people worldwide. Ineffectiveness of the drugs in some cases and the serious side effects and chronic toxicity of the antiepileptic drugs lead to use of herbal medicine as a form of complementary and alternative medicine. In this review modern evidences for the efficacy of antiepileptic medicinal plants in Traditional Iranian Medicine (TIM) will be discussed. For this purpose electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, Sciencedirect, and Google Scholar were searched for each of the antiepileptic plants during 1970-February 2013.Anticonvulsant effect of some of the medicinal plants mentioned in TIM like Anacyclus pyrethrum, Pimpinella anisum, Nigella sativa, and Ferula gummosa was studied with different models of seizure. Also for some of these plants like Nigella sativa or Piper longum the active constituent responsible for antiepileptic effect was isolated and studied. For some of the herbal medicine used in TIM such as Pistacia lentiscus gum (Mastaki), Bryonia alba (Fashra), Ferula persica (Sakbinaj), Ecballium elaterium (Ghesa-al Hemar), and Alpinia officinarum (Kholanjan) there is no or not enough studies to confirm their effectiveness in epilepsy. It is suggested that an evaluation of the effects of these plants on different epileptic models should be performed.

Title: A scientific correlation between blood groups and temperaments in Unani medicine.
Authors: Ali, Syed Mahtab et all.
Journal:
Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge (+)
Impact Factor(IF):
0.49
Year: 2007
Abstract:
In Unani Medicine, Mizaj (temperament) is most important though a difficult theory as it indicates the properties of an atom (Unsur), a molecule, a cell, a tissue, an organ and of the organism as a whole. As the Unani therapy is dependent upon equilibrium, so if there is any change in Mizaj the equilibrium is disturbed in any way the life is threatened. Mizaj is derived from an Arabic word Imtizaj, which means meeting or mix with each other. The literal meaning of Mizaj according to Ibne Nafees is “intermixture of different components.” The word temperament used to describe mizaj is derived from a Latin word Tempero, which means to mix. In the study, effort is made to relate temperaments, blood groups and immunoglobulins.
